The
Ab-centric Power of Belly Dancing
Let me guess, sit-ups aren't
really your thing? And the only crunch you want to think about is the
sound of biting into a tasty treat. So, what's the alternative to
reducing that unwanted mid-section? Belly dancing!
Yes, we've all been
mesmerized by the mystical power of belly dancing each time Shakira
takes a stage. We'd bet that you've probably considered buying
one of those beautiful costumes draped with colorful chiffon and
jewels, exposing the curves that define your physical feminine beauty.
But, can this exotic dance lead you on a pleasurable journey to
sensational abs? Yes. That's just what the PGF Crew found out when we
visited Nazeem Allayl Belly Dance Studios last Saturday.
Belly dance achieves physical
fitness through controlled dance movements that isolate specific
muscles - mostly the abdominals, but also hips, thighs, and
biceps/triceps when working those snake arms. With dance moves
such as the belly roll, vertical and horizontal figure eights and the
pelvic tilt, you too will quickly discover abdominal muscles you never
knew you had. And as you advance, the cardio value increases,
which leads to weight loss. Can it get any better?
Well, we can't guarantee that
you'll look like Shakira or that you can audition as one of her dancers,
but we can guarantee that you will find a fitness activity that is fun,
exotic and ab-centric!
By the way, belly dance is all-inclusive.
People of any height, weight, age group and background can participate
in this dance.

Notes from
the Underbelly:
Fitness benefits: Belly
dance does wonders for keeping you fit, strengthening your core,
correcting your posture and developing strong muscles.
History
lesson: Belly dancing originated as a means of helping women
prepare their abdominal muscles for labor and became part of ceremonies
to celebrate the birth of a baby and worship women as mothers.
Eventually, these religious rites became part of everyday life in the
countries of the Near/Middle East, North Africa and the Mediterranean, danced by both men and women.
Culture lesson: Today, in
the Middle East, women dance for other women--for their friends,
neighbors, aunts, mothers, and cousins. They use it to amuse themselves
during the day while the men are out earning a living, after the
household chores for the day are done. They use it to celebrate happy
family occasions such as weddings, and even today in some parts of the Middle East the men's celebrations are in a separate room from those of the women.
Myth buster: The coin
bra/belt set idea was born in the United States and not a traditional
Middle Eastern or Northern African garment.
